Best flea treatment for small dogs in Australia

    Introduction

Small dogs need accurate dosing and products that fit their lifestyle. The goal is comfort and year-round protection with a routine you will not miss. This guide was prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

What small dog owners should look for

    • Correct weight band. Reweigh often in the first year.

    • Ease of dosing. Chews suit many small dogs that are bathed or swim.

    • Schedule fit. Monthly habits are easy to stack with other tasks. Longer-acting options reduce how often you need to remember.

    • Household mix. If you also want heartworm prevention and intestinal worm cover, consider a combined product so you keep one calendar.

    Chew, spot-on, or collar?

    • Chews are unaffected by bathing and suit active or groomed dogs.

    • Spot-ons can work for fussy eaters but need a dry period after application.

    • Collars provide on-pet protection if fitted and worn continuously.
Pick the format you can give on time, every time.

    Dosing and reminders

Most products are monthly. A few are longer-acting. Set a phone reminder and tie dose day to an easy date. If you use different products for different parasites, follow the shortest interval so you do not leave gaps.

    Safety you should always check

    • Dog products for dogs only.

    • Choose the correct weight band and check minimum age.

    • Do not stack different flea and tick products unless your vet advises it.

    • Ask your vet before starting if your dog is pregnant, breeding, unwell, or on other medicines.

    FAQ

My dog is under 2 kg. What should I choose?
Check the minimum age and weight on the pack and ask your vet if you are close to the lower limit. Accurate weight is essential for very small dogs.

Can I split a chew to make it fit the weight band?
No. Use the correct pack for your dog’s current weight.

Do I still need monthly worming and heartworm prevention?
Yes. If your flea and tick choice does not include heartworm or intestinal worms, add a separate plan or consider a combined product such as Simparica Trio.
