Flea prevention for kittens in Australia

    Introduction

Kittens are close to the floor and love warm naps, which makes them easy targets for fleas. Good prevention keeps them comfortable and protects your home. This guide was prepared by our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    When to start

Begin as soon as your chosen product’s minimum age and weight allow. Weigh your kitten often and move to the next weight band as they grow. If your kitten is too young or small for a product, focus on daily flea combing and a clean home routine until you can start.

    Choosing a product

Most kittens do well on a monthly spot-on. Some products last longer. Either can work when you match the weight band and follow the label. Choose the format you can give on time, every time.

    Dosing and reminders

Set a phone reminder. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember and count the next dose from that day. If you use different products for different parasites, follow the shortest re-dose interval so you do not leave gaps.

    House routine that helps

    1. Vacuum carpets, rugs, sofas, and car seats. Empty the vacuum outside.

    2. Hot wash kitten bedding and washable throws, then dry well.

    3. Declutter sleeping spots so there are fewer fabric “nests.”

    4. Keep going for at least three months once you start treatment to clear hidden stages.

Safety you should always check (cats)

    • Use cat-only products on cats. Never apply a dog product to a cat.

    • Avoid exposure to permethrin or other pyrethroid dog spot-ons.

    • Choose the correct pack for your kitten’s current weight and age.

    • Do not stack flea products unless your vet tells you to.

    • Read labels carefully for kittens, breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats.

    FAQ

When can I start flea prevention for my kitten?
When your kitten meets the minimum age and weight on the pack.

Is bathing enough instead of a spot-on?
No. Bathing can soothe skin but doesn’t prevent re-infestation. Use a registered product and keep to the schedule.

What if I still see fleas after I start?
That’s common early on. Fleas emerge from the home environment. Keep dosing on time and keep up the cleaning routine.
