Sheep measles tapeworm risk for farm and rural dogs

    Introduction

“Sheep measles” is caused by the tapeworm Taenia ovis cycling between dogs and sheep. It does not make dogs look sick, but it costs farmers when cysts are found in sheep meat. The fix is straight-forward: stop dogs eating infected sheep parts, pick up poo, and keep to a tapeworm plan. If you’d like a farm-ready protocol for your dogs, contact us.

    How the cycle works

    • Dogs get infected by eating raw sheep meat or offal that contains cysts.

    • Infected dogs shed eggs in their poo onto pastures.

    • Sheep swallow eggs while grazing. Cysts develop in muscles and are found at processing.

    Why it matters

Cysts mean trimming losses or, in heavy cases, carcass condemnation. Breaking the cycle protects your farm, neighbours, and local industry.

    Practical prevention on farms

    1. No raw offal or carcass access. Do not feed raw sheep meat/offal and fence off disposal areas.

    2. Pick up dog poo daily in and around sheep yards, shearing sheds, and homesteads.

    3. Worm for tapeworm: your vet may recommend regular praziquantel dosing for farm and working dogs, especially during risk periods.

    4. Control strays. Keep visiting or stray dogs away from stock areas.

    5. Hygiene. Wash hands after handling dogs and before food prep.

Note: Many popular monthly combo products do not treat tapeworm. Ask your vet about adding a praziquantel tapewormer on the correct interval for your district.

Broader parasite protection for farm dogs and cats

A steady flea/tick and general worm plan keeps pets comfortable and reduces other risks around stock.
