Tapeworm is common in cats that hunt or have fleas. It looks alarming but is usually simple to fix with the right medicine and a short home plan.
You might see small white segments that look like rice grains near the tail or in the litter tray. Some cats scoot or vomit segments. Many act normal between episodes.
Most cats get Dipylidium tapeworm by swallowing an infected flea while grooming. Hunters can also pick up tapeworm from eating prey. That is why treatment pairs with flea control and simple hygiene.
See your vet for a tapewormer. Products that contain praziquantel are commonly used for adult tapeworm.
Control fleas on your cat and in the home so reinfection is less likely.
Tidy resting spots and wash bedding hot.
Recheck after a few weeks if you still see segments.
Keep your cat on a monthly parasite product for broad cover, and run flea control year-round. If your cat hunts, talk to your vet about how often to repeat tapeworm treatment.
Revolution Plus Spot-On for Cats. Monthly spot-on for fleas and ticks with heartworm prevention, mites, roundworm and hookworm when used as directed. Helps reduce tapeworm risk by controlling fleas.
Revolution Topical Solution for Cats. Monthly spot-on for fleas and mites with heartworm prevention. Use with your vet’s tapeworm plan if needed.
Use cat-only products on cats. Never apply a dog product to a cat.
Match the weight band and check minimum age every time.
Do not stack wormers unless your vet tells you to.
Ask your vet before treatment if your cat is pregnant, breeding or unwell.
Will a flea-only product cure tapeworm?
No. Tapeworm usually needs a praziquantel medicine. Flea control helps stop it returning.
Do indoor cats get tapeworm?
Yes. Fleas and prey can both bring risk indoors.
How soon should segments stop?
Often within days after the right treatment. Call your vet if you still see segments later.
