Flea control for long haired dogs in New Zealand

    Introduction

Thick, long coats hide flea dirt and make bites harder to spot. A simple grooming routine, steady prevention and a light home clean keep things under control. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Grooming that supports prevention

Brush to the skin, not just the top layer. Use a slicker or pin brush to lift tangles, then a fine flea comb around the neck, rump and tail base. Wipe the comb on a damp white tissue. Brown specks that turn red are flea dirt. Keep mats trimmed so product can reach the skin and air can circulate.

    Weekly rhythm

    • Full brush and quick flea comb check

    • Hot wash bedding and dry thoroughly

    • Vacuum rugs, sofa seams and car mats and empty the vacuum outside

    Choosing a format

Many long coated dogs do best on oral chews because there is nothing sitting on the coat. Collars can work if fitted snugly and kept on continuously. Dose every dog in the home on the same day so you do not leave gaps.

    Bathing and swimming

Give chews on schedule. If you use a collar, keep it on as directed. Rinse salt and sand after beach days and towel dry to keep skin comfortable.

    FAQ

I never see fleas but my dog still scratches. What now
Check with a flea comb and run the weekly clean. Long coats hide signs. Stay on schedule with prevention and monitor for improvement.

Does clipping the coat help flea control
Shorter trims make checks and grooming easier but are not essential. Consistent prevention and cleaning matter most.
