Multi-pet households in New Zealand: stop fleas spreading

    Introduction

Fleas do not stay loyal to one pet. If one animal brings them home, every dog and cat becomes part of the cycle. The fix is a single house schedule and a few habits you can keep all year. Reviewed with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    One schedule for every pet

Pick a monthly dose day and treat every pet on that date. Put the packs together in a labelled box, write last and next dates on each, and set a phone reminder. If one pet uses a longer-acting option, add a mid-interval nudge so it is not forgotten.

    Calm, consistent application

Chews for dogs are simple after a small meal. For cat spot-ons, part the hair to clean, dry skin and place high on the neck. Keep housemates that groom each other apart until dry. Do not split doses or mix products unless your vet advises.

    Lower the home “flea pressure”

Vacuum rugs, skirting and sofa seams and empty the vacuum outside. Hot-wash bedding and favourite blankets and dry thoroughly. Shake and sun-dry door mats and car rugs. If you recently saw fleas, keep this weekly rhythm for three months while hidden stages clear.

    Quick wins

    • Treat visitors’ pets as a risk and ask owners to stay current

    • Keep food sealed and bins lidded to reduce scavenging and worm risk

    • Re-weigh growing pets before each dose to confirm the right band
