Ticks in New Zealand thrive in sheltered bush, long grass and coastal scrub. Activity rises with warmer, humid weather and after rain. The fix is simple: steady prevention and a quick hands-on check after outdoor days. Reviewed with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.
Edges of bush tracks, fence lines, dune grass behind beaches and scrubby reserves hold moisture and shade. Leaf litter and overgrown verges near car parks can be hotspots too.
Spring through late summer is the main run, with spikes after warm rain. In mild coastal pockets, activity can flicker on during sunny winter spells.
After walks, run hands over coat and skin. Look at:
Lips and chin, ear edges, under the collar
Armpits and groin
Between toes and around pads
Tail base and along the ruff
Part the coat, grip close to the skin with a tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers and lift straight out with steady pressure. Seal the tick and wash hands. Watch your pet for a day or two.
Keep grass short near sleeping spots and trim dense shrubs so you can see the skin during checks. Shake and sun-dry car rugs and travel mats after beach or bush trips. Rinse salt, sand or mud and towel dry to the skin.

Use species-specific products, match the correct weight band and minimum age, and avoid stacking different preventives unless your vet advises.
We keep finding the odd tick in busy seasons. Is that normal
Yes. Stay on time with prevention and keep the nightly check going.
