Night-roaming cats in New Zealand: flea and tick guide

    Introduction

Night adventures mean long grass, sheds and hunting, which raise flea, tick and worm risks. A calm, repeatable spot-on routine plus a light weekly clean keeps things under control. Reviewed with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Make application calm and sure

Apply on a quiet evening before your cat heads out. Part the coat to clean, dry skin and place the liquid high on the neck where it cannot be licked. If you can, keep your cat indoors until the site is dry.

    Helpful habits

    • Set a fixed monthly date and add a phone reminder

    • Separate housemates that groom each other until dry

    • Reward with a treat so the routine stays positive

    Night roaming realities

Hunters pick up flea stages and can swallow infected prey that carry tapeworm. Keep litter trays clean, pick up hair from favourite couches and hot-wash blankets to lower indoor pressure.

    Weekly rhythm

    • Vacuum rugs, sofa seams and cat trees and empty the vacuum outside

    • Wash bedding hot and dry thoroughly

    • Shake out car rugs and carriers used for evening vet visits

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

Cat products for cats only. Dose to today’s weight and match minimum age. Do not stack different spot-ons unless your vet advises.

I still see the odd flea even on schedule
Hidden stages can emerge for weeks. Stay on time and keep the weekly clean going.
