Puppy school in NZ: flea and tick basics

Introduction

Puppy school adds shared mats, busy floors and lots of wiggly friends. Keep prevention on schedule, size correctly as your pup grows and tidy the gear you use each week. Guidance reviewed with our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

Grow fast, dose right

Puppies change weight quickly. Reweigh before each dose and buy the correct band. Put dose dates in your calendar and add a reminder for the next class block so you do not miss a month.

Training-night routine

Give chews after a small meal at home so class stays about rewards, not new tastes. If your household uses a cat spot-on, apply it after class and keep pets apart until dry. Bring a clean towel or crate liner for your station.

After class

• Quick hand-over-coat check

• Focus on ear edges, under the collar, armpits, groin, between toes, tail base

• Shake and sun-dry car rugs and training towels

• Rinse muddy paws and dry to the skin

Social visits and playdates

Ask friends with dogs to keep their prevention current. Keep bowls clean and bins lidded so scavenging does not add worm risk. Maintain one house dose day for every pet in the home.
