Spring parasite prep for New Zealand pets

    Introduction

Spring brings longer walks, coastal tracks and the first warm rains that wake flea and tick cycles. A little prep now keeps the season easy. Reviewed with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Refresh your schedule

Choose one house dose day for the next six months and add phone reminders. Reweigh pets after winter to confirm the correct band. Replace any expired packs and store them in a cool, dry spot.

    Yard and gear tidy

Mow near sleeping spots and trim dense shrubs so tick checks are easier. Sun-air door mats, wash car rugs and dry them fully. Check collars for fit on dogs that gained winter fluff and trim the excess.

    Add the quick spring check

    • Ear edges and under the collar

    • Armpits, groin and between toes

    • Tail base and along the ruff

    Home rhythm

Vacuum rugs and sofa seams weekly and empty the vacuum outside. Hot wash pet bedding and favourite blankets and dry thoroughly. Keep this steady for three months if you see early season fleas.

    Safety basics

Species matters and bands change with spring fitness. Avoid stacking preventives unless your vet advises.
