Travel Checklist for Kiwi Pets: Parasite Protection for Road Trips and Baches

    Why plan ahead
Holiday parks, baches, beaches and bush tracks raise parasite risk. A little prep keeps your pet comfortable and protected so you can relax.

    Your 7-day countdown

    • Day 7: Check your stock. Make sure you have the right pack for your pet’s current weight.

    • Day 5: If you use a long-acting product, confirm the next due date covers your whole trip.

    • Day 3: Wash bedding and vacuum the car. Start a nightly tick check routine.

    • Day 1: Dose today if you are due in the next week. For spot-ons, apply to clean, dry skin and let it dry fully. For chews, give with a meal.

    • Travel day: Pack products in your day bag so you do not miss a dose.

    Things to pack:

    • Your pet’s parasite product in the correct weight band

    • Tick remover or fine tweezers

    • Spare tag with your mobile number

    • Clean bedding or a washable throw

    • Poop bags, wipes and a small rubbish bag

    • A towel for beach days

At the bach, beach or in the bush:

    • Do a quick nose-to-tail tick check each evening. Focus on head, ears, neck and between toes.

    • If you use spot-ons, follow the label on bathing or swimming wait times. Keep the application site dry until then.

    • Keep food sealed and bins closed to reduce scavenging and worm risk.

    • Dose every pet in the group on time to prevent bounce-back.

    Coming home:

    • Wash bedding hot and vacuum the car and soft crates.

    • Reconfirm your next due date in the calendar.

    • If you were in tick-prone areas, keep daily checks going for two weeks.

    • Travelling to Australia soon. Ask your vet about heartworm and a travel plan.

    Trusted options for the road:
Pick an application you can give on time, every time.

    Simple safety tips:

    • Weigh your pet and choose the correct pack each time.

    • Use dog products on dogs only. Never use dog products on cats.

    • Do not combine treatments unless your vet advises it.

    • Keep spot-ons away from children and other pets until dry.

    • If your pet has a health condition, is pregnant, or takes other meds, ask your vet first.

    FAQ

Should I switch to a chew if my dog swims a lot
Many owners choose a chew for frequent swimmers. If you prefer a spot-on, plan doses around swim days and follow the label wait time.

Do indoor cats need cover on holiday
Often yes. New places, new risks. Keep monthly prevention on time and check daily if you visit tick areas.

What if I find a tick on the trip
Remove it promptly with a tick remover or tweezers held close to the skin. Keep the tick if you can and watch your pet. If you see wobbliness, vomiting or breathing changes, contact a vet at once.
