Working dogs in New Zealand: parasite control made simple

    Introduction

Heading dogs, huntaways and station teams cover big distances through scrub, long grass and stock yards. The routine does not need to be complicated. Keep prevention on schedule, tidy the places dogs sleep and ride, and run quick hands-on checks after busy days. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Kennel and ute habits

Shake out crate mats and kennel bedding in the sun. Hot-wash and dry thoroughly each week, or more often after wet runs. Hose out trays and tie-down points and let them air dry. Keep a small kit behind the seat with a tick tool, wipes and a spare towel.

    Team scheduling

Pick one dose day for the whole team. Treat every dog the same day and tick them off a simple list. Working dogs change weight with the season, so re-weigh regularly and buy the correct band.

    After-work check

    • Quick scan with hands over coat and skin

    • Ear edges, lips and chin, under the collar

    • Armpits, groin, between toes and tail base

    Choosing a format

Most working dogs do well on chews because water, mud and baths do not affect protection. Collars can help if fitted snugly and worn continuously. Store products at home in a cool, dry place rather than in gloveboxes or trays.

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

    • Dose to today’s weight and match minimum age

    • Do not stack different preventives unless your vet advises

    • Check collar fit weekly on hard-working dogs and trim excess
