Adult dog parasite plan in Australia

    Introduction

Adult dogs do best on a steady routine you can follow every time. This guide gives you a simple plan for fleas, ticks, heartworm and intestinal worms. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

The quick plan at a glance

    • Fleas and ticks: use a proven product on schedule, all year

    • Heartworm prevention: monthly, without gaps

    • Intestinal worms: usually every 3 months for adults, unless covered in your monthly product

    • House routine: vacuum, hot-wash bedding, and check for ticks in risk areas

Step 1: choose a format you can keep

    • Chews: great for beach and bath dogs; not washed off

    • Collar: on-pet protection if fitted and worn all the time
Pick the option you will give on time. Treat every dog in the home on the same day.

    Step 2: set the rhythm

    • Most products are monthly

    • Some flea and tick chews are longer-acting

    • If you use different products for different parasites, follow the shortest interval so you do not leave gaps

    Step 3: add two reminders

    1. A repeating phone calendar event on dose day

    2. A second reminder for any long-acting product halfway through the interval
Keep the box near the food bowl as a visual cue.

    Step 4: tick risk habits

In paralysis-tick regions, do a quick daily check: lips, ear edges, under the collar, between toes, armpits, groin, tail base. After hikes or beach days, check again that night and next morning.

    Safety you should always check

    • Dog products for dogs only

    • Match current weight band and minimum age

    • Do not stack different preventatives unless your vet advises

    • Ask your vet before dosing if your dog is pregnant, breeding, unwell, or on other medicines

    FAQ

Can I combine a monthly all-in-one with a long-acting flea and tick chew?
Only if your vet advises it. Avoid double coverage without guidance.

What if I miss a month of heartworm prevention?
Give a dose today and ask your vet if a heartworm test is needed before restarting.

How do I switch products safely?
Start the new product when the old one is due so you avoid gaps or double dosing.
