Cats do best on a steady routine that covers the big risks. This guide gives you a simple plan for fleas, ticks, heartworm prevention and intestinal worms. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.
Fleas and ticks: use a proven spot-on on schedule, all year
Heartworm prevention: monthly for cats using a product that lists it on the label
Intestinal worms: many cat spot-ons cover roundworm and hookworm; add a tapeworm tablet only if your vet advises
Home routine: vacuum, hot-wash bedding, and keep up prevention for at least three months if you are clearing an infestation
Most cats do best with a spot-on. Pick between a monthly option for broad cover or a long-acting option if you prefer fewer applications. Apply to clean, dry skin high on the neck where your cat cannot lick.
Monthly products are easy to tie to a date you never miss
Long-acting options reduce how often you apply
If you use different products for different parasites, follow the shortest interval so you do not leave gaps
A repeating phone calendar event on dose day
A second reminder for any long-acting product halfway through its interval
Store products together, high and dry, so nothing is missed.
Vacuum rugs, sofas and cat trees, then empty the vacuum outside
Hot wash bedding and favourite blankets, dry thoroughly
Treat every pet in the home with species-appropriate products
Keep going for at least three months to clear hidden stages
Cat-only products for cats. Never apply a dog product to a cat
Match current weight band and minimum age every time
Do not stack different spot-ons unless your vet advises
Ask your vet before dosing if your cat is pregnant, breeding, unwell, or on other medicines
Revolution Plus Spot-On for Cats — monthly spot-on for fleas and ticks, with heartworm prevention and cover for roundworm and hookworm when used as directed
Bravecto Spot-On for Cats — long-acting flea and tick control, fewer applications to remember
Revolution Topical Solution for Cats — monthly spot-on for fleas and mites with heartworm prevention
Do indoor-only cats need prevention
Yes. Fleas hitchhike in and mosquitoes carry heartworm. Year-round prevention prevents flare-ups.
Can I bathe after applying a spot-on
Keep the coat dry for the time on the label. If your cat is bathed often, a long-acting option can be simpler.
What about tapeworm
Hunting and flea ingestion raise risk. Your vet may add a tapeworm tablet if needed.
