Public transport with pets in New Zealand: flea, tick and worm checklist

    Introduction

Buses, trains and station platforms add shared floors and crowds. You do not need a complex routine. Keep prevention on schedule, protect soft gear and run a quick check when you get home. Reviewed with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Before you ride

Use a secure carrier or a short lead and bring a small towel for damp seats or floors. Keep a flea comb and a zip bag in your tote for quick clean-ups. Dose a few days before big travel weeks so protection is active.

    On board habits

    • Keep carriers off the floor if possible

    • Avoid waiting on long grass beside platforms

    • Offer water after warm, crowded rides

    After the trip

Shake and sun-dry carrier liners and travel rugs. Vacuum the boot or pram basket and empty the vacuum outside. If you walked through bushy shortcuts, run a two-minute tick check: ear edges, under the collar, armpits, groin, between toes, tail base.

    Safety basics

Store product packs cool and dry, not in hot backpacks. Match species, weight band and minimum age. Avoid stacking preventives unless your vet advises.

    FAQ

Do I need to change products for frequent bus or train use
Usually no. Keep doses on time and focus on clean, dry travel gear.
We sometimes see a flea after a city trip. Is that normal
Yes. Hidden stages can hitchhike on soft items. Keep the light clean going.
